Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS

As I mentioned in my review of the PowerShot A710 IS last week, Canon launch a lot of new models every year, but even so I was astonished to learn that since its inception in June 2000 there have been no fewer than 27 different cameras in the Canon Digital IXUS range. Whats even more remarkable is that for the last six years, those 27 models have pretty much defined the market standard of ultra-compact digital cameras. They have consistently managed to combine stylish design, superior build quality, exceptional performance and cutting edge technology with ease of use and superb picture quality. Of course those advantages come at a price, and the Digital IXUS range has always been expensive compared to its market competitors.

Take this IXUS 850 IS for example. Launched just last month in time for the Photokina camera show, its a 7.1 megapixel ultra-compact with a 3.8x optical zoom lens and a 2.5in monitor, which would put it on the same shelf in the camera shop as cameras like the Pentax Optio T7 (199), the Casio Exilim EX-Z70 (179), the Sony DSC-W70 (164) or the Olympus mju 700 (163).

20,000 expected at Johor's first digital camera fair

JOHOR BARU: More than 20,000 visitors are expected to throng the four-day digital camera fair to be held at the City Square here from Oct 19.

It is the first digital camera fair in Johor with over 50 promoters of leading brands such as Canon, Olympus, Sony, Nikon, Kodak, Panasonic, Pentax and Casio to showcase their latest products. Organising the event, Fotokem Sdn Bhd manager Thomas Liew said a large number of Singaporeans were expected to turn up at the fair. Liews optimism is based on the fact that Singaporeans can get the latest camera models and accessories at attractive prices due to the exchange rate. He said the fair was timely in view of the Deepavali, Hari Raya, Christmas festivals and the school holidays. Fotokem, which has 26 outlets nationwide, opened its first three outlets in Johor Baru at the City Square, Holiday Plaza and Jusco Permas Jaya in July.

Canon Camera's Pretty Picture

Few senior executives know more about digital cameras than Canon (CAJ) President, Tsuneji Uchida. The 64-year-old has spent over 40 years at Canon, most of it rising through the ranks of the company's camera division. That experience made Uchida a natural choice to succeed Fujio Mitarai in May, when the legendary chief stepped down after a decade at the helm. .

Easy digital videos propel YouTube

Spend an hour browsing the videos posted on YouTube.com. Then ask why anybody would pay $1.6 billion for this collection of stupid pet tricks, fraternity pranks, garage bands, car crashes, natural disasters, amateur acrobats, soccer game snippets and hokey comedians demonstrating why their careers are on the express train to Palookaville.

That astronomical sum, by the way, is what the folks who run the Google search engine agreed to pay for the Web's favorite video site.

When I heard the news this week, my first thought was of H.L. Mencken's famous observation that nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

My second thought: Where did all this stuff come from?

Actually, most of it comes from you and me, or at least from our kids.

First Look: Nikon D80

Ten-megapixel SLRs were once pricey cameras reserved for those with deep pockets. But since summer, when the groundbreaking Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 brought the price for this class of camera down to about $1,000, the market is heating up. One of the latest entries, Nikon's D80, offers features and performance that used to cost hundreds of dollars more. The D80 costs $1,299 with its 18-to-135-mm kit lens or $999 for the body alone.

As with other SLRs, the D80 has extensive manual controls, can shoot images in both JPG and RAW formats, and has excellent battery life (about 600 shots per charge). It has a large, 2.5-inch LCD, and can shoot continuously at 3 frames per second for up to 23 JPEG images at the highest resolution, highest-quality settings; 100 JPEG images at the highest resolution, middle-quality settings; or 6 RAW images.
